Earth Star fungus

The Earth Star fungus or Geastrum triplex found in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in Canberra. The young specimens appear as small half-buried puffballs and at maturity the outer layer splits in the stellate manner you see here to reveal the round inner sack which is pushed up to be ready to release the spores it contains.
