Graham Gall

Eucalyptus camaldulensis

Description

Eucalyptus camaldulensis, river red gum

Naas Road, Tharwa

This spectacular specimen is thought to be the last known river red gum to exist in the ACT. Canberra is on the edge of the geographic range for river red gums, but it is unusual that only one tree remains. Believed to be hundreds of years old, it raises the question, was this tree planted here for some significant reason, or is it a remnant from a time when many more river red gums existed in the area?
